The garden surrounding Villa Farnesina in Rome was created in the 16th century as a celebratory extension of Agostino Chigi’s residence: originally stretching as far as the Tiber, the garden housed rare plants rich in symbolic significance, alongside works of art designed to engage with the classical world that inspired the complex.
This volume reconstructs its entire evolution for the first time: from the Aurelian Walls to ancient artefacts, right through to contemporary installations. A detailed analysis of the plant species present captures the charm of a unique green oasis in the heart of Trastevere.
